A Dutch international who tried to smuggle drugs with a street value of over half-a-million pounds into Glasgow Airport has been warned he is facing jail.

Rico Janneman was caught with 52kg of cannabis, a Class B drug, in his luggage at the busy Paisley transport hub on August 15 last year.

Paisley Sheriff Court heard the drugs had an estimated bulk value of £197,600 and an estimated street value of £520,000. Defence agent Kevin Brady told the court this was a “sad story”.

Explaining why the 23-year-old had appeared in the town’s sheriff court from custody, he explained: “When he first appeared, he was deemed a flight risk at the time as he is a Dutch international with no connection to here.”

Janneman, of the Netherlands town of Veghel – which sits to the north of Eindhoven and is around 45 minutes from the German border – admitted to being concerned in the supply of cannabis.

Sheriff Thomas Ward stated: “This is a serious matter. It’s a substantial amount of drugs and it’s likely you will go to jail but I have to call for a criminal justice social work report and a restriction of liberty order assessment as you don’t have any previous convictions against you here.”

Sentence was deferred for the preparation of reports and Janneman, described as a prisoner of Low Moss jail in Bishopbriggs, East Dunbartonshire, will return to court for sentencing on February 7. He was remanded in custody meantime.
