CAPITOL HEIGHTS, Md. (WJLA) – Authorities in Maryland say the remains of a missing mother were found hidden behind a newly built wall in her boyfriend’s home. He is now charged with her murder.
Alexis Schuler, 29, was last seen Jan. 10 in Washington, but she wasn’t reported missing until last Tuesday. By then, it is alleged 30-year-old Devontae Gray had shot and killed the mother of three then hidden her body inside a plastic storage bin, which he encased in cinder blocks and concrete, according to court documents.
Police say Gray then concealed the “makeshift tomb” under a stairway behind a newly constructed wall of lumber, drywall and faux bricks in his home in Capitol Heights, Maryland.
Gray was the father of one of Schuler’s children and her on-again, off-again boyfriend. Detectives believe the killing occurred during a dispute.
There was a history of domestic violence with the couple. Gray previously accused Schuler of abuse, calling police as recently as Jan. 9 to report he was in fear and may shoot her if she entered his house.
Schuler’s cousin, Derrick Felder, says she was the actual victim, and domestic violence should not be ignored.
“Alexis’ story is a painful reminder this is not what love looks like. Someone who truly loves you would never do what Devontae Gray did to her. Please take domestic violence seriously,” he said.
Gray was taken into custody and has reportedly confessed to the murder. He is charged with first-degree murder and related offenses.
