A steak bake is one of the most iconic pastries on Greggs’ menu, so it’s no wonder foodies panicked when they found out the bakery had recalled the much-loved item earlier this week.

A recall was issued on Monday, January 20 for its two-pack of Steak Bakes after a packaging error led to some of the packs containing Sausage, Bean and Cheese Melts, which contain sulphites.

The Food Standards Agency said the packs affected by the Greggs recall are 280g in size and have a best before date of May 19, 2025. As they are sold exclusively to Iceland, shoppers were urged not to consume them, but to instead return them to store for a full refund.

With fans now potentially no longer able to get their hands on the at home version, a TikTok chef’s take on the bakery staple will help fans create their own.

And creator @tomjustcooks claims his version of the steak bake tastes so much better than the Greggs original.

Ingredients

– 250g rump steak, diced into small cubes
– 1 large onion, finely chopped
– 2 cloves garlic, minced
– 1 cup beef stock
– 1/2 cup red wine (optional, for richness)
– 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
– 1-2 sprigs fresh thyme (or 1/2 tsp dried thyme)
– 1-2 bay leaves
– Salt and pepper, to taste
– Ready-made puff pastry sheet
– 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)

Instructions

Sear the Steak:
Heat a little oil in a large pan over medium-high heat. Add the diced rump steak, searing it until browned on all sides.

Cook the Onion & Garlic:
In the same pan, add the chopped onion and cook until softened and golden, about 5 minutes. Add the minced garlic and cook for another minute until fragrant.

Build the Sauce:
Pour in the red wine and allow it to simmer for 2-3 minutes, letting the alcohol cook off.
Add the beef stock, Worcestershire sauce, thyme, and bay leaves. Season with salt and pepper, then bring to a boil.

Simmer:
Reduce the heat to low, cover, and let the mixture simmer gently for 2 hours, or until the beef is very tender and the sauce has thickened. If the sauce is too thin, uncover for the last 20-30 minutes to let it reduce.

Prepare Pastry:
Preheat your oven to 200°C (400°F).
Roll out the puff pastry and cut it into equal-sized rectangles, depending on how many steak bakes you’re making.

Assemble the Bakes:
Spoon the cooled steak mixture onto one half of each pastry rectangle, leaving a border around the edges. Place another rectangle on top.
Press the edges down with a fork to seal, then cut small slits in the top for steam to escape.

Egg Wash and Bake:
Brush the tops with the beaten egg for a golden finish.
Bake in the air fryer for 15-20 minutes, or until the pastry is golden and crispy.
