Striker Kyogo Furuhashi is reportedly closing in on a move to Stade Rennes following Celtic’s qualification for the Champions League knockout stage.

The 30-year-old has reportedly been the top target for boss Jorge Sampaoli as he looks to steer his side away from the Ligue 1 relegation zone. The Japanese international found the net three times in Wednesday night’s clash with Young Boys – but saw his trio of efforts wiped out by VAR on each occasion before Loris Benito’s own goal sealed the Scottish champions place among Europe’s elite in the knockout phase.

But another impressive display for Kyogo only appears to have pushed him further towards the exit door. Le Parisien report that “an agreement has just been reached between Rennes and Celtic” for a €12m (£10.1m) fee. It is noted that he has “probably played his last match” for the club during the Champions League victory over the Swiss side.

It is claimed that a deal has now been “accelerated” and Kyogo will “strengthen Jorge Sampaoli’s team in the coming days.” UEFA rules state that clubs cannot alter their squads during the league phase – with clubs allowed to register a maximum of three new players by February 6 should they progress from the league phase.

Dropped points against Young Boys and a sale of Kyogo would have left Adam Idah as the only recognised first-team striker in their Champions League squad going into the do or die clash with Aston Villa. However, after qualification an Celtic exit appears to have been green lit.
