WYTHEVILLE, Va. – The Wythe County Sheriff’s Office said one person is dead after police responded to a shooting on January 23.

According to a press release, the Wythe County Sheriff’s Office said they were joined by the Wytheville Police Department to respond to a call at 2605 West Ridge Road at around 1 a.m. about a shooting.

When officers arrived, the Wythe County Sheriff’s Office said a woman was found dead with a gunshot wound.

The Sheriff’s Office said Chad Nelson Hawks was taken into custody and charged with the following:

  • Second-Degree Murder
  • Use of a firearm in the commission of a felony
  • Reckless handling of a firearm
  • Discharging a firearm inside an occupied dwelling

The Sheriff’s Office said the investigation is ongoing, and that Hawks is currently held at the New River Regional Jail.
