As we near the end of January, most of us are desperate for the spring to begin so we can say goodbye to the cold bitter wind and say hello to some warmer, longer days. The warm weather also brings with it the craving for a BBQ in the garden with family and friends.

However, some people may start to change their regular BBQ menu when they watch a video on how hotdogs are actually made. After watching the YouTube video, many viewers have claimed that they will never eat them again.

The YouTube channel, How It’s Made, has shared a video explaining how hotdogs make it onto supermarket shelves, and it seems like it only takes five minutes to turn a horde of people against a BBQ staple. The video shows the process of how the sausages are made.

It says: “The cuts they start with are called trimmings – pieces of meat left over from cutting steaks or pork chops. The trimmings are ground the same way butchers chop up hamburger meat by pushing the cuts through grated metal plates.”

The Mirror reports that after this step, chicken trimmings are added to the ground meat, followed by food starch, salt, and other flavourings. The creator adds: “Water is sprayed into the mix and everything is blended together in a big vat. Corn syrup adds a dash of sweetness.”

Even more water is added to the mixture in order to make the hotdogs even “juicier” before they are put into another machine to puree the meat batter. To create the sausage shape, rolls of cellulose tubing are loaded into the stuffing machine so the mixture can sit inside them.

He said: “It takes just 35 seconds to make enough hotdogs to span a football field, twice. The hotdogs are then moved into another machine before making their way through a “liquid smoke shower” to add flavour to them as they bake in an oven.

“Hot out of the oven, they’re drenched in cold, salty water to chill them in preparation for packaging.” Finally, the hotdogs make their way onto a conveyer belt so “steamy air” can blow the cellulose tubing off the sausages before they are tinned.

Many of the commenters were left shocked, and possibly feeling a bit ill. One user said: “I haven’t had a hotdog in about 10 years thanks to this show.” Another user added: “Showed this to my class. I don’t regret it.” A third user said: “I was like this is actually not that bad until the corn syrup.”

However, the process hasn’t turned everyone off the food, as one user added: “People say you’ll never eat it if you see how hotdogs are made. This is actually better than I thought it would be.” One user agreed: “This is a lot more tame than what I imagined. I’m also still gonna keep eating hotdogs.” A final user said: “Not only will I continue to eat hot dogs, I’m eating one while watching this.”
