PRINCETON, W.Va. -In Mercer County students from six counties gathered for the Regional Science Fair.
This is the first time Mercer County has hosted the science fair, and organizers say they are just excited for the kids.
Students from McDowell, Mercer, Monroe, Raleigh, Summers and Wyoming counties were all represented from grade levels 3rd through 12th.
With 97 projects and almost 150 students, participants were able to enter the fair individually or within a group.
One organizer for the event says these students are great and she is proud to have so many students at the Regional Science Fair.
“We have the biggest and brightest out here today. I mean they have just come up with these ideas that fit under these categories, they have come up with these hypothesis and scientific methods and they have put it to test. Then they put it in a project and get out there to present to adults. So, I mean these kids are really showcasing knowledge that is to be proud of and we are just really excited for the kids,” said Amber Riffe, the Elementary and Pre-K Supervisor for Mercer County Schools.
One participant focused on the shapes of sound, and she says she has a close attachment to this project.
“I was first inspired to do this project because my dad, his two brothers and my papa, they are all hard of hearing, and it is scary when I can walk right up to his ear, and he can’t hear me. So, I wanted to find a way to make this world more inclusive for those hard of hearing or even completely deaf,” said Zooey Brown, 5th grader at Mountain Valley Elementary School.
