Rio Ferdinand was left in awe by Bailey Rice as he praised the Rangers kid for ‘seeing pictures’ in his play.
The youngster was summoned from the bench for the second half in the huge Europa League Battle of Britain clash with Manchester United after Connor Barron was forced off as one of two injuries in the opening 45 minutes alongside Leon Balogun. Highly-rated Bailey took to the famous Old Trafford turf and his performance caught the eye of the former England superstar.
He showed his vision to pick out Cyriel Dessers with a pass that ended with the striker clipping the outside of the post and that had Rio gushing in commentary duties. He said: “I’ll tell you what. I like Rice. He’s come on and looking composed and that left foot looks like it has a bit in it. He’s seeing pictures, playing and executing. That is a wonderful pass.”
He wasn’t the only Rangers star he waxed lyrical over as an unseen moment involving skipper James Tavernier earned top praise. A lot of criticism towards the Ibrox captain comes in the shape of leadership and his vocal side – but it was evident for Rio who kept a close eye on him after he was moved to the heart of Philippe Clement’s backline. A host of inexperience was called upon due to mounting injuries pre and during the game, and it was the coaching side from Tavernier that stood out.
McCoist started by saying: “He has played well tonight Tavernier. Going into that position he is not accustomed too. I think he’s had a pretty good game”.
Ferdinand added: “I have been watching him the last 10 minutes since he has went into central defence. He’s coaching a lot of these young lads through it. Talking, communicating. This is what they need these young players in these big games and in these big moments.”
It was a night that would ultimately end in heartbreak for Rangers as Dessers’ stunning touch and finish looked like it had earned a share of the points after Jack Butland’s howler gifted Man Utd the lead in the second half. But Jefte was caught out napping at the back post and Bruno Fernandes nipped in to fire home in added-time to secure the win for Ruben Amorim.
