Scotland is feeling the full force of Storm Éowyn which has set new wind speed records of 114mph.
With police issuing a Do Not Travel warning and the country urged to stay indoors, the majority won’t venture out. But if you do have to, will your car insurance be valid?
The AA has urged drivers to consider whether any journey is completely necessary.
Chris Wood, AA Patrol of the Year, said: “As the warning has risen from Amber to Red in the most northern and western areas of the UK, we urge drivers to consider whether their journey is necessary and if not postpone it.
“If you do need to travel, make sure you’re prepared for what you may encounter. Expect to come across fallen branches and other debris on the roads, especially in rural areas.
“Allow extra time for your journey, as it’s likely to take longer than usual. Pack the essentials for emergencies in case you do breakdown – warm waterproof clothing, a torch, and a flask of hot drink. Ensure your mobile phone is fully charged and download the AA app and what3words to help us get to you faster if the worst should happen.”
Lambert, temporary motor insurance expert at Tempcover, has spelled out where drivers stand in an official weather warning when it comes to your car insurance. Here he answers the commonly asked questions on the subject.
1: Does driving during a red weather warning automatically void your insurance?
Many drivers may believe that taking to the roads during an official weather warning – particularly a red one – could instantly invalidate their car insurance. Lambert explained, “It’s a common misconception. Your car insurance is unlikely to be voided just because you’re driving during a weather warning. However, insurers do expect motorists to act responsibly. If you drive recklessly or ignore advice from authorities, that’s when issues could arise.”
2. But will I be covered covered for weather-related damage?
From flooded roads to fallen trees, winter weather can wreak havoc on vehicles. But are you covered if the worst happens? “Comprehensive car insurance policies usually cover weather-related damage, including flooding and storm damage,” says Lambert. “However, third-party-only policies won’t provide this level of protection. It’s always best to contact your insurer directly if you’re unsure about how your policy would apply in certain weather conditions.” Tempcover’s temporary car insurance can offer a flexible option for those needing comprehensive cover during adverse weather, whether for an hour, day, a week, or longer.

3. Will any claim just be rejected if I haven’t followed a weather warning advice?
Lambert emphasises that insurers assess claims on a case-by-case basis. “If you’ve taken reasonable precautions and your car is damaged by unavoidable circumstances, your claim is likely to be valid. The key is demonstrating that you’ve acted responsibly, even in challenging conditions.”
And he added: “Weather warnings don’t mean you’re automatically uninsured. By knowing your policy and driving safely, you can stay protected and confident, no matter what the weather brings.”
