Commuters in South Lanarkshire have been hit by travel delays after strong winds toppled trees causing road closures.

Trees were brought down as Storm Eowyn swept across the area with hurricane-force gales wreaking havoc.

A gust of 100mph was recorded at Drumalbin in South Lanarkshire as Storm Éowyn continues to batter Scotland.

Police have closed the A726 Queensway, East Kilbride down to one lane as two massive trees fell onto the carriageway outside South Lanarkshire College.

And cars have been pictured trapped under fallen trees across the area.

One image even showed a trampoline as it flew past a block of flats in Hamilton.

A rare red weather warning for “very strong winds” that could present a “danger to life”, is in force from 10am until 5pm today.

The Met Office has said that the storm could cause a “danger to life” over “flying debris”.

Police advice is to stay at home and avoid travelling.
