A Manhattan man was killed in a car crash in central Connecticut early Sunday morning when his vehicle was struck by a tractor-trailer.
Tamek Skinner, 30, was driving on Interstate 84 through West Hartford when a big rig hit him from behind around 1:30 a.m., Connecticut State Police said in a report. He was pronounced dead at Hartford Hospital at 2:15 a.m.
Skinner was driving in a BMW sedan eastbound in the far right lane of I-84 just before Exit 44 at the time of the crash. A tractor-trailer driven by Andrew Corkran, 46, hit Skinner’s vehicle from behind, cops said.
The two vehicles remained stuck together until they came to a rest on the right shoulder, state police said. Corkran did not suffer any injuries and declined medical attention at the scene. Both vehicles were towed.
No other passengers were in either vehicle, according to police. The BMW driven by Skinner was registered to a Marietta, Ohio, resident named Aaliyah Williams. The tractor-trailer had New Jersey license plates and was registered to a dealer in Hillsborough.
A section of I-84 through West Hartford was closed for about five hours early Sunday, local CBS affiliate WFSB reported. However, it reopened around 6:30 a.m. in time for most Monday morning commuters. Ramps near Exits 42 and 43 were closed for a bit longer.
