Fans know that ice hockey isn’t for the faint-hearted, but a mass brawl at the end of a Scottish National League game has prompted a probe from the sport’s governing body.
A bad-tempered meeting between the Edinburgh Capitals and Kirkcaldy Kestrels at Murrayfield Arena on January 25 ended with the home side winning 2-1 – but it was at full-time when things really bubbled over. Players from both sides could be seen throwing punches as the referees struggled to keep control, with individual scraps breaking out between players all over the rink – and some even appearing to swing their sticks at opponents.
And the unsavoury scenes have now led to both clubs being investigated by Scottish Ice Hockey. In a statement they said: “Scottish Ice Hockey (SIH) is aware of a number of incidents that occurred during and after the Scottish National League (SNL) game between the Edinburgh Capitals and Kirkcaldy Kestrels at Murrayfield Ice Arena over the weekend.
“While we are deeply disappointed by the events that transpired, SIH emphasises the importance of adhering to due process. We urge all parties to avoid jumping to conclusions as investigations progress. In line with our commitment to fair and transparent governance, SIH will allow the initial investigations and disciplinary processes to be completed before taking further steps.
“Following the conclusion of these processes, SIH will initiate a Serious Incident Review (SIR) to ensure a comprehensive understanding of the events and any necessary actions. At this time, SIH will make no further comment on the matter. We remain dedicated to upholding the integrity of the sport and fostering a safe and respectful environment for all involved.”
Fans on social media were quick to show their disappointment at the violent scenes, believing they had crossed a line. One said: “Overall it was a disgraceful display from both teams. The ref clearly lost control of the game early doors and should have spoken to the coaches earlier in the match to stop it escalating. Hockey is a physical game but this wasn’t that, it was dirty hockey and fights breaking out everywhere again and again. This is how players get hurt. The referee, the coaches and the players all had a part to play.”
Another posted: “Hockey its a physical game but dirty hits can cause serious damage. Remember this is the equivalent of a pub league players are not meant to be getting paid and all have jobs they need to attend Monday morning. There should be a few getting banned from the videos flying about.”
