AUSTIN, Texas — Travis County commissioners have approved nearly $2 million to help Habitat for Humanity build 48 new homes in the Whisper Valley neighborhood in eastern Travis County.
The three- and four-bedroom homes will be sold at reduced prices to families making less than 80% of our area’s median income.
The project is part of the Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter Work Project and special rules will keep the homes affordable for the next 99 years.
“This partnership with the Austin Habitat for Humanity will result in life-changing investments for families in the historically underserved Eastern Crescent,” said Jeff Travillion, Travis County commissioner, Precinct 1. “Every family should have the opportunity to purchase an affordable home that can be passed on to the next generation. With this investment, may we honor the legacy of President Carter by continuing to serve, build and uplift our communities.”
Commissioners said the investment provides low-income families an opportunity to build wealth and break the cycle of intergenerational poverty.
“This investment serves as yet another example of Travis County’s commitment to spark development across the affordable housing spectrum, from housing for the homeless to homeownership,” said Ann Howard, Travis County commissioner, Precinct 3. “The Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter Work Project is the lasting legacy of a loving couple whose mission was to serve the underprivileged. I am proud that the Commissioners Court has a vested interest in continuing this mission.”
