Crews and contractors are working to manually stop the flow of water out of the dam, Austin Water said.

AUSTIN, Texas — Levels at Lady Bird Lake continue to drop after a gate at Longhorn Dam failed while in the open position on Tuesday afternoon.

According to Austin Water, crews were performing scheduled work when one of the nine gates failed, causing the lake level to begin dropping. As of 2 p.m., the water level was down by 1 foot and was continuing to drop. By around 5 p.m., the lake had dropped 2 feet.

The cause of the failure is under investigation.

Crews and contractors are working to manually stop the flow of water out of the dam, Austin Water said.

Austin Water says that the issue will not impact water or wastewater services for Austin Water customers. The water level at Lady Bird Lake will remain low until repairs can be completed.

As of around 3:30 p.m., South Pleasant Valley Road between Cesar Chavez Street and South Lakeshore Boulevard is closed to vehicle and pedestrian traffic in both directions while repairs are being made.

Austin Water said it has notified the Lower Colorado River Authority and downstream communities.
