Princess Beatrice has announced the arrival of her second daughter, who she and her husband, Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi, have affectionately named Athena.

The name, while not traditional within the Royal Family, holds significant meaning for the couple. Athena, a name deeply rooted in history, is fitting for the newest addition to their family.

In Greek mythology, Athena is revered as the goddess of wisdom, courage, and inspiration, symbolising strength, intelligence, and independence – qualities that Princess Beatrice undoubtedly hopes to instil in her daughter.

Athena was a key figure in ancient Greece, often associated with the city of Athens. Prince Philip, born in Greece, had Greek relations, and Beatrice shared a close bond with her grandparents, reports the Mirror US.

The name could also be a nod to Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi’s Italian heritage, straying from traditional British names. This isn’t the first time Princess Beatrice has opted for a unique approach to naming her children.

In 2021, the couple named their first child Sienna Elizabeth Mapelli Mozzi, honouring Beatrice’s late grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II. Sienna’s name may also pay tribute to her mother, Sarah, as they share the same initials,

This has sparked speculation that Athena might be a tribute to her father, Andrew.

Experts behind Baby Name Envy Podcast commented on the moniker, writing on Instagram: “I like that she has Sienna and Athena – both place names. And the girls share the middle name Elizabeth.

“I love all the modern royal names – it’s nice they’re quite daring!”

Princess Beatrice and her new-born daughter are reportedly in great health despite the early arrival of the baby, with both already back at home following a brief hospital stay.

Due to an expected early spring birth, the princess was advised by doctors against long-distance travel.

Buckingham Palace officially announced: “Her Royal Highness Princess Beatrice and Mr Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi are delighted to announce the safe arrival of their daughter, Athena Elizabeth Rose Mapelli Mozzi, born on Wednesday, 22nd January, at 12.57pm, at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, London.”

The statement added: “The baby was born weighing four pounds and five ounces. Their Majesties The King and Queen and other members of the Royal family have all been informed and are delighted with the news.”

Ecstatic about his daughter’s birth, Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi, Beatrice’s husband, expressed his happiness on Instagram by posting a photo of baby Athena swaddled in a blanket.

He wrote in the caption: “Athena Elizabeth Rose Mapelli Mozzi. We welcomed baby Athena into our lives last week. She is tiny and absolutely perfect. We are all (including Wolfie and Sienna) already completely besotted with her.

“Our hearts are overflowing with love for you, baby Athena.”

Beatrice’s husband voiced his gratitude to hospital staff, adding: “A massive thank you… to all the wonderful staff at the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital for their exceptional care and support during this incredibly special time.”

Princess Eugenie welcomed the latest addition to the York family with joy, sharing a photo of baby Athena and captioning it “Welcome Baby Girl”.
