Celtic and Aston Villa fans were seen in violent clashes ahead of last night’s key Champions League fixture with pyrotechnics being thrown.
On the park, Brendan Rodgers men put up a brave fight but ultimately lost the “Battle of Britain” fixture 4-2, with both sides progressing into the latter stages of the competition.
However, the game was marred by some ugly scenes before and during the match.
Footage shows Celtic fans arriving at a train station near Villa Park, where rival were waiting to meet them with Union Jack banners and red flares. Towards the end of the video, green fireworks can be seen heading in the direction of Villa fans.
As the clip ends police officers can be seen charging in to split up the two warring factions.
West Midlands Police brought in road closures around Villa Park amid an “elevated risk” with letters sent to local residents around the stadium ahead of the game.
Fighting also broke out in the stands as Celtic fans were targeted after buying tickets for the home end.
Images were also widely shared on social media of banners hanging over a motorway bridge as Celtic fans made their way to the Midlands.
One was daubed with a derogatory term sprayed on the banners, telling them to “Get out of Brum.” It also said “F*** the Pope and the IRA. AVFC our city.”
Birmingham Live reports that the letters read: “We are writing to inform you about changes to the road closure arrangements for the upcoming fixture against Celtic. These changes are part of our existing counter-terrorism strategy and have been carefully planned in consultation with governing bodies to ensure the safety and security of all attendees and residents.”
West Midlands Police and Celtic FC have been approached for comment.
