WASHINGTON (WWBT) – Three Fairfax County Public Schools students and six parents were among those who died Wednesday night when a plane and helicopter collided at Reagan National Airport.
“We are devastated by the tragic news as we learn members of our FCPS community have lost their lives in the accident last night at Reagan National Airport,” the school division posted on its website.
The school division says two of the parents who died were current or former FCPS staff members.
“Multiplying the grief are the siblings, spouses, relatives, friends and colleagues who have lost loved ones,” the school division said.
Loudoun County Public Schools says multiple victims of the collision were former students.
“This unimaginable loss has deeply affected our community, and with great sorrow, we have learned that multiple victims were former LCPS students,” the school division said. “Many other Loudoun families have also been impacted, and we extend our deepest condolences to all those grieving in the wake of this tragedy.”
Both school divisions are offering additional support to students, staff and family members.
“Loss of this magnitude can bring a wave of emotions,” LCPS said. “Please know that you are not alone. We are here to support you, and we will navigate this difficult time together.”
The Associated Press reports that all 67 people aboard the two aircraft died in the collision.
The collision is the deadliest U.S. air crash since 2001.
