Scotland’s “best fish and chip shops” have been crowned by renowned travel magazine Time Out.
All over Scotland, there are countless chippies that serve up crispy battered fish and tasty chips. Everyone has their own local favourite, but some fish and chip shops are more acclaimed than others.
Time Out recently published a list of the “17 best fish and chip shops in the UK”. A total of three Scottish chippies are included in the nationwide list.
The highest-placing Scots takeaway on the magazine’s roundup is the Anstruther Fish Bar. Coming in at number five, the fish and chip shop is situated in the Fife town of Anstruther and overlooks its harbour.
The Anstruther Fish Bar, which has previously been named the best in the country by VisitScotland, offers a varied fish menu of haddock, sole, hake, and more. Customers can also enjoy prawns, fish cakes, burgers, and even curries.
Time Out stated: “If there’s a general rule of thumb to follow when it comes to finding good fish and chips, it’s that the closer a chippy is to a body of water, the better it’s likely to be. That rationale certainly rings true for the Anstruther Fish Bar.
“Looking out over the harbour, this award-winning takeaway and restaurant specialises in fresh fish and seafood – of both the fried and non-fried variety. Fried-wise, you’ve got to go for the tender Scottish haddock that comes encased in an ethereally light, crispy batter. If you’re after something that hasn’t touched a drop of oil, though, then the dressed crab should be what’s on your radar.”
Meanwhile, placing at number six on Time Out’s list of the best chippies in the UK is Fochabers Fish Bar. Located in the Moray village of Fochabers, the takeaway was applauded for its “refreshingly retro interior”.
Fochabers Fish Bar serves up a range of haddock suppers, as well as burgers, sausages, and puddings. Time Out stated that the dishes “look (and taste) great”, and gave praise to the takeaway’s fast and friendly service.
Finally, Time Out also included Frankie’s Fish & Chips in Brae on its roundup. The Shetland fish and chip shop came in at number nine on the list.
The magazine praised the café and takeaway for “sourcing premium and sustainable” food, as well as its peaceful location. It singled out the “crisp” battered haddock and battered sausage as particular highlights of the menu.
