Thousands of Barclays customers have been left in financial limbo on what is payday for many after a major outage crippled the bank’s services.

Users reported being unable to access their accounts, make payments, or check if their wages had been paid from 9.45am today, Friday, January 31.

DownDetector received over 3,000 complaints about Barclays’ digital services, with the majority related to mobile banking issues and 38 per cent struggling with online banking, reported as of Tuesday ay 4pm.

According to the outage website’s maps, the issues appear to be UK wide, with Glasgow and Edinburgh being the most affected area in Scotland so far.

The disruption sparked widespread frustration among customers, who took to social media to express their discontent, reports the Express.

One customer tweeted: “Barclays is down again. I think it’s time to switch.”

Another wrote: “I’m trying to pay my tax and your online banking keeps crashing. You did anticipate it being a busy day, right?”

A third customer added: “I’m trying to pay HMRC but my payment won’t go through despite me confirming in the app?”

The Barclays UK Help team responded, stating: “We’re aware of some issues which are being investigated as urgent.”

However, for some customers, the damage was already done, with one declaring: “Final straw for me this, I’ll be moving my business’ account elsewhere. Can’t pay wages etc..”

One customer recounted their frustrating experience with a failed transaction, saying: “I tried my card in the shop and the machine and both declined even though I have funds available so no cards and machines may not be used!”

Barclays has apologised for the inconvenience caused by current technical issues, directing customers to this website for updates.

A Barclays spokesperson added: “We’re having some problems with some of our systems today – we’re sorry about this and we’re working hard to fix the issue.

“You may have trouble using some features in our app, Online Banking as well as payments in and out of your accounts – we’re also unable to help you over the telephone or our Message us service.”

They assured that standard card and ATM transactions should proceed normally, advising: “You can still use your cards and cash machines as normal. For updates and to request a text when we’re back up and running search ‘Barclays service status’ online.”
