Michael van Gerwen insists he’s no fashion icon and admits The Green Machine may soon be parked up for good.

The Dutch star bothers mainly about his performances as opposed to looks and the three-times World Champion has always worn green during his career with the regular colour earning him his nickname. However, with his new look black and gold going down a storm in Milton Keynes, Van Gerwen has hinted at long-term permanent change from his famous darts style.

He’s been been kitted-out in the clobber to celebrate his partnership with Winmau as they also sponsor the rebranded PDC ranking event. Van Gerwen’s current change is temporary, but asked if a long-term switch could be in the offing, he said: “Not now, but in the next upcoming months, yes. That’s how branding works these days. They have a lot of people in the office working about stuff. I’m not a really fashionable guy. I just love to play darts and the rest I don’t really care about.

“Of course, I want to have a nice looking darts shirt, but I’m not really bothered about a lot of things for the rest. I’m really glad that the Winmau World Masters is back. I’m glad I’m with Wimmau It’s an iconic name and I think it’s good for darts.

“This was my first major back in the day. I really like it and I’m proud to be part of it. It’s a new icon on the agenda and all the players want to do well. It’s a ranking tournament and I think the PDC made a great decision.”

Van Gerwen meets Dimitri Van den Bergh tonight as he hunts the title and said: “There’s always motivation, especially when there’s a little bit of extra pressure with my sponsor. I’ve been playing with them already for quite a few years now, and also in the upcoming years.

“I want to give them something back and I am going to try absolutely everything to make that happen. The fire still burns in my body and as long as that is the case, I can do anything.”
