Halifax’s banking app has reportedly gone down, leaving hundreds of desperate customers unable to access their bank accounts.

Consumers have been left in a tizzy after the high street bank was hit with a deluge of complaints from around 5.30am today, Monday, February 3, according to real-time service monitor site Downdetector.

More than 400 people have detailed struggles with making and receiving payments on the site, which tracks outages and issues with a range of services across the UK. The majority of the problems – 79 per cent – concern funds transfer, while 14 per cent and seven per cent have run into trouble with their mobile and online banking.

The outage map appears to show most of the difficulty taking place in England although there is some activity around the Glasgow and Edinburgh areas in Scotland. It is not yet known how widespread the issue is across the UK.

Disgruntled customers have taken to X, previously Twitter, to blast the bank.

One wrote: “Why aren’t I receiving bank transfer money into my account? it’s always instant but it’s been over an hour and I need to pay my rent?! what the hell is going on?”

A second scribed: “So you are choosing to ignore some customers then? I need to pay my credit card with the funds I cannot access because the transfers are f****d! Are you going to pay my interest??????”

A third furiously typed: “An important payment left my account this morning but I don’t want to pay interest if it does not arrive to the recipient on time… What is going on?”

Halifax has apologised for the issue. A spokesperson explained: “We know some customers are having issues making or receiving payments. We’re sorry for this and are working to have everything back to normal.

“If you’d been affected by this, you’ll get details of how you can make a complaint here.”

It comes at the same time as the Lloyds banking app reportedly going down, with the same amount of consumers – more than 400 since the early hours of this morning – “unable to make or receive payments”.

Lloyds Bank has acknowledged and apologised for the goings-on and has promised to make it right soon.
