A teenage Scots football fan was attacked at a game at the weekend.
Scottish football club Greenock Morton has slammed its own supporters as police probe an assault – after flares were set off and a teenage fan was attacked.
Investigations are underway after the youngster was set upon in the streets outside Firhill Stadium, Partick Thistle’s ground, in Glasgow, on Saturday afternoon.
The 13-year-old was targeted in the area’s Firhill Street, after Inverclyde club Greenock Morton drew 2-2 with with their Glasgow hosts in The Scottish Championship.
Police Scotland and Greenock Morton both confirmed they are now investigating the incidents outside the ground, which is also known as Wyre Stadium at Firhill.
A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 5pm on Saturday, 1 February, 2025 we were made aware of the assault of a 13-year-old boy in the Firhill Street area of Glasgow. Enquiries are ongoing.”
A Greenock Morton spokesperson said: “Following our statement issued after Saturday’s match at Firhill in relation to the use of pyrotechnics, the club is further appalled to receive reports and eye-witness accounts of a small minority of Greenock Morton supporters attacking a young person whilst leaving the match.
“To make it abundantly clear, these people are not true Greenock Morton supporters in respect of the way they conduct themselves and the acts which they have taken part in.
“We express nothing but disgust at what has been brought to our attention, and we hope that true Greenock Morton supporters will assist us in identifying these individuals so that the appropriate action can be taken at the easiest opportunity including Police involvement.
“The club extends its upmost sympathy to the young person who was the victim of this attack, and we will try to reach out to him directly to ensure he is fully supported through this very traumatic situation.
“We appreciate the short- and long-term impact that this experience could have on the young person and want to ensure that his wellbeing and involvement in football is not affected by this.
“As a community-owned football club, we should take pride in being passionate, supportive, and together without it leading to violence and physical abuse. We do not believe that the incident outlined above is representative of what our supporters stand for.
“The club takes and will continue to take a zero-tolerance approach to these behaviours along with the use of pyrotechnics. All supporters should feel safe at any football stadium and not in fear of where they walk to get home or who they may encounter.”
The club’s earlier statement, regarding pyrotechnics, said: “Greenock Morton would like to remind supporters that the use of pyrotechnics at football is illegal and can lead to police action.
“We are disappointed that a small number of fans utilised pyrotechnics at todays match with Partick Thistle, narrowly missing young children that were on the pitch. This will mean the club being answerable to the authorities for the actions of a small number of people.
The club will now liaise with Partick Thistle and the relevant parties to try and identify those responsible for utilising pyrotechnics and take the appropriate action which could lead to a football banning order.”
