Dalbeattie Star are set to be without two of their top strikers for the foreseeable future.

Dale Milligan has already been out for a month with no return date in sight and now Ross Hunter has joined him on the treatment table.

And with Dan Carmichael having left for Annan Athletic, the South of Scotland League champions are light in attack.

But gaffer Eddie Warwick insisted: “They’re out and they’re a big miss but because we’re missing them doesn’t mean we’re not going to score goals.

“We still have Olly Meechan, Cammy Shaw, Connor Potts and the boys from Queen of the South.

“It’s not easy when you lose players of that calibre – one was arguably the best in the league and the other two are in the top six.

“It’s 70 goals out of the team.

“I’m not sure if Dale will make it back this season, Ross has still to be assessed and Dan is away to Annan.

“Other boys will need to step up as Dale and Ross were in the mid 30s for goals last season and Dan didn’t play a lot but he was in double figures.

“We’re not going to panic, we just need to take our chances when we get them.”

Star had to rely on other players doing the business in front of goal on Saturday as they came from behind to win at Lochmaben.

The hosts led 2-0 thanks to goals from Adam Davis and Kieran Brown but in first half stoppage time Russell Williamson headed home to give Star hope.

Connor Potts levelled things up early in the second half and with three minutes left skipper Ewan Gourlay cracked home a half volley to complete the turnaround.

Warwick said: “We weren’t great in the first half but we didn’t do a lot wrong. They had a couple of breakaways and were clinical with the two chances they had in the first half.

“They had one other chance in the game about 85 minutes, which might have gone in if it would have been on target, and that was it.

“In the first half they were full of the usual energy, fight and endeavour and it’s a difficult environment.

“To get the goal just before half-time changed things a wee bit. We didn’t deserve to be 2-0 down, they weren’t a million miles better than us but they took their chances and we huffed and puffed a bit.

“In the second half we tweaked the system, played from the half way line to their box and put them under pressure.

“It would have been ourselves to blame if we didn’t with the chances we missed. We were skewing things wide and putting things off target, wasted opportunities.

“We kept plugging away, got another corner and it was a ridiculous finish from a centre half. He’s missiled it into the top corner and I don’t think he’ll score many of them.”

Saturday’s league game was a brief respite from cup action with the Potts Cup taking centre stage on Saturday.

Star will face Bryan Gilfillan’s Upper Annandale, with the game being played in Dumfries rather than Moffat.

Warwick said: “We’ve got to play them twice in the league so this will give us a feel for them as they’ve added a few players.

“They’re a very good side now, Bryan’s worked hard and managed to get a bit of quality in his team.

“I would fully expect them to have a strong end of the season, they’re not going to be a push over.

“It’ll be tough game, but it’s a cup game and it’ll give us a chance to see what improvements they’ve made from the game pre-Christmas.

“It’s at Palmerston, which probably suits both teams as there’s lots of good footballers in both sides.”
