An opening date has been confirmed for Blantyre’s new supermarket, which is getting set to welcome back customers after being completely rebuilt.
Lidl will open its upgraded branch at Whistleberry Road on Thursday, February 13, with the supermarket calling the new store “bigger and better” than its predecessor which was on the same site and saying it will offer “a significantly upgraded shopping experience”.
Ten additional jobs have been created with the opening of the rebuilt supermarket, with existing staff also returning to the store – which will feature expanded bakery and chiller sections, toilets including baby change, electric vehicle rapid charging points and solar panels on the roof which will help to power the store.
Shoppers visiting on opening day and throughout the weekend will be able to enjoy complimentary food samples as well as Lidl Plus offers to celebrate the reopening.
Lidl GB regional head of property Ross Jackson said: “We’re thrilled to announce the opening of our new state-of-the-art store in Blantyre. This site has been a key part of the community for nearly three decades, and we’re delighted to stay there whilst being able to better meet the needs of locals.
“We want to thank everyone for their patience during construction and look forward to welcoming customers through the doors – we’re confident they’ll love the upgrades as much as we do.”
The new store has a sales area of 1340 square metres, making it one-third larger than its predecessor, which had been on the same site for nearly 28 years.
Its opening comes three years after planning permission for the demolition of the old store building, dating back to the 1980s, and the construction of the modern new replacement was granted by South Lanarkshire Council.
The revamped Lidl will retain its previous opening hours of 8am to 10pm Monday to Saturday and 8am to 8pm on Sundays.
