The popular BBC drama The Gold is set to return to television screens later this year with a much-anticipated second series. The acclaimed factual drama – first released in January 2023 – is rooted in the real events of the 1983 Brink’s-Mat robbery and its extensive aftermath.

Award-winning writer Neil Forsyth continues to helm the project, while Patrick Harkins takes the directors chair for this upcoming chapter, alongside Charlie Leech who steps in as producer.

The BBC has unveiled an exciting collection of first-look images previewing what’s in store for season two of The Gold. The snaps confirm the return of several familiar faces to their roles and also the arrival of a fresh batch of talent joining the line-up.

Audiences will welcome back Hugh Bonneville as Brian Boyce, Charlotte Spencer as Nicki Jennings, Emun Elliott as Tony Brightwell, Tom Cullen as John Palmer, Stefanie Martini as Marnie Palmer, and Sam Spruell returning as Charlie Miller.

New entrants gracing the cast for the second series include Tom Hughes, Stephen Campbell Moore, Joshua Maguire, Tamsin Topolski, Joshua Samuels, Rochelle Neil, Antonia Desplat, Lorna Brown, Thomas Coombes, Sean Teale, and Olivia Grant, reports the Mirror.

The BBC teased: “Following the conviction of some of those involved in the theft and handling of the Brink’s-Mat gold, the police realised that those criminals only ever had half of it. Series two explores what happened to the other half, and the criminal fortune it created.

“As the police investigation continues, it becomes a tense, high-stakes journey into international money laundering and organised crime, the police embark on a series of dramatic manhunts as they desperately try to solve the longest and most expensive investigation in the history of the Metropolitan Police.”

Neil Forsyth, creator, writer and executive producer said: “The second and final part of The Gold sees the story of the Brink’s-Mat robbery, and everything that stemmed from it, become even more expansive, surprising and international.

“It has been a real thrill for me to see the scripts brought to life so brilliantly by our director Patrick Harkins, our fantastic cast, and our hard-working crews in the UK and Spain. We are delighted with the results and look forward to the series launching later this year.”

The Gold season 2 will air on BBC One and BBC iPlayer later this year. Season one is available to stream on iPlayer now.
