We all love that fresh carpet look and feel, but it’s not always easy keeping your floors looking pristine.

A single spill can spell disaster for a brand-new carpet and many believe it to be a costly mistake to fix. However, cleaning expert, Manish Jain, Founder of Ministry of Cleaning, said addressing stains immediately reduces the need for a deeper clean later on.

Manish recommends baking soda to tackle foul smells that may be lingering on your floor. The simple cupboard staple neutralises odours and absorbs any moisture that has been left behind.

The cleaning guru said you don’t have to spend endless hours on your carpet. In fact, all you need is 10 minutes. Follow her simple steps to keep your floors fresh.

Vacuum like a pro

Vacuuming removes dirt and dust – especially the bits you can’t see. Again, this might be a task that you avoid doing but it’s a quick fix to improve the look and feel of your home. Plus, if you’re short for time, focus on high-traffic areas such as by doors and sofas.

Tackle Stains Fast

Watermarks, colouring pens, even red wine – whatever the stain, it can cause havoc to your carpet and leaving it will only cause further damage. Try to treat stains as soon as you see them with a clean cloth and stain remover. Gently blot and never scrub as this could damage the carpet fibres.

The baking soda magic

Carpets can soon begin to smell without the right treatment but thankfully it can be sorted with a household ingredient: baking soda. Simply sprinkle the powder onto your carpet and let it sit for 3 minutes. The solution neutralises odours and absorbs any moisture.

Finish with a final vacuum

Once the baking soda has settled, vacuum the carpet again to remove any powder along with dirt and odours. Afterwards, you should find your carpet looks great and smells even better!

Year-round freshness advice

Prevention is always better than cure when it comes to cleaning so to ensure your carpet is well-maintained whatever the season, follow these tips:

  • Clean and vacuum regularly to avoid a build-up of dirt

  • Address stains immediately to reduce the need for a deeper clean later on

  • Place mats and rugs in high-traffic areas to reduce wear and tear

  • Use your hand to fluff up carpets and lift any matted fibres

  • Steam clean with a portable steam cleaner and lift dirt, disinfect and bring your carpet back to life in five minutes

  • Rub a lint roller or pair of rubber gloves over the carpet to lift any hair or pet fur

By following the above tips, even weekly, you can prolong your carpet’s life by preventing dirt and dust buildup. Even better, it reduces the need for expensive professional cleaning services, saving both time and money in the long run.
