More than 100 people helped shine a light on suicide support charities on Saturday night.

Pals Katy Brown and Lorna Hellam organised Lighting Up Criffel, with people from across Dumfries and Galloway and beyond using their head torches and other lights to brighten up the hill.

The event was one of 12 Big Things that Katy from Amisfield and Lorna, from Thornhill, have planned over 2025 to raise money and awareness for charities that offer support to people contemplating suicide and relatives of people who have taken their own life.

And their first “thing” certainly grabbed the attention, with the lights being visible for miles around.

Some people carried special torches with a photo and story about someone who has lost their life to suicide, with members of Buccleuch and Queensberry Pipe Band leading the group on their way up the hill.

Thanks also go to Moffat Mountain Rescue Team, Ben for marshalling and Mr Purdie for use of his land for parking.

The 12 Big Things series aims to raise money and awareness for the charities Campaign Against Living Miserably (CALM) and Survivors of Bereavement by Suicide (SoBS).

February will see Lorna tackle a half marathon and Katy swim a marathon distance over the course of the month.

And they are also planning to light up Sale Fell in the Lake District on March 15.
