Amid the cold snap of February, households grappling with steep energy bills might find solace in a straightforward boiler tweak. By simply adjusting their boiler’s flow temperature, they could shave £163 off their annual energy bill in mere moments.

Often, boilers are programmed to operate between 70 – 80°C by default, which, although it speeds up heating, leads to unnecessary energy wastage as surplus heat is lost through the boiler flue.

Stephen Day, a Heating Engineer at iHeat, has provided some insightful advice on the subject: “Lowering the flow temperature of your boiler is one of the simplest yet most effective ways to improve boiler efficiency. It’s a quick adjustment that can save energy and money without sacrificing home comfort.”

He notes that setting the boiler flow temperature to 60°C engages the “condensing mode,” which is more energy-efficient as it captures heat that would otherwise escape.

This smart modification keeps the thermostat temperature stable, even though radiators might take a tad longer to heat up — a negligible inconvenience compared to the potential savings on energy expenditures, reports the Express.

Dialling down your boiler’s flow temperature might trim your energy bills by up to 9%, say the specialists, hinting at an average annual saving of around £163—or a monthly relief of £13—for the typical household. On how to tweak your boiler’s flow temperature, Stephen advises: “If your boiler is connected to a hot water tank, consult a professional before making this change to avoid unintended issues.”
