WASHINGTON (CNN) – The CIA has offered buyouts to its entire workforce as President Donald Trump works to shrink the federal government and shape it to his agenda.

The offer made Tuesday tells CIA employees they can quit their jobs and receive roughly eight months of pay and benefits. Every employee at the agency received the offer, but some specific occupations and areas of expertise may be restricted from it.

It’s part of Trump’s broad effort to shrink the federal government and shape it to his agenda.

While many federal organizations have extended similar offers, the CIA is the first major national security agency to do so. That comes after newly appointed CIA Director John Ratcliffe personally decided he wanted his agency to be involved.

The Trump administration is also planning widespread layoffs in the federal government, so some workers may feel inclined to accept the buyout instead of being terminated.

Union leaders have urged their members not to accept buyouts.
