BRIDGEPORT, W.Va (WDTV) – 95 percent of alleged child abuse offenders are someone that the child already knows. This is according to new statistics released by the West Virginia Child Advocacy Network outlining their data for child abuse reported in 2024.

The WVCAN operates 21 child advocacy centers across the state. At these centers, staff work together to investigate abuse, hold offenders accountable and help children heal.

According to the recent report, 16% of the children served at the WVCAN centers were there because of allegations of drug endangerment, which is four times higher than the national average.

Additionally, out of the four types of abuse reported, sexual abuse was the most common at 48%.

Parents made up over 2,000 of the alleged offenders reported, which was over 1,000 more than the next highest category.
