BRIDGEPORT, W.Va (WDTV) – Future Generation University is a prominent educational resource within the Wild and Wonderful, that specializes in the interdisciplinary field of applied community development. For over three decades the institution has aimed to improve future generations by having a global focus in practices so local adaptation responds to emerging challenges. Within their Appalachian program the institution offers virtual information sessions that focus on different fields in Agroforestry. According to program officials like, Casey Withers, they’re hoping to educate; while also promoting growth amongst the Wild and Wonderful.
“We kind of do an assortment of things, but it’s all kind of connected to community engagement and outreach and education. Primarily based around Agroforestry. So, where Agriculture and Forestry meet; which is a lot of the farms in West Virginia and the Appalachia.”
There are many interesting aspects of agroforestry that many people can gravitate towards; but those at future generations want to help you find the right fit.
“One big piece of what we try to offer is providing some support towards economic opportunities that are available in the state. Especially through these major based enterprises. So, whether it’s Bee Keeping or Soap making or Maple Syrup production; we try to see what people in the community are trying to achieve with their endeavors. Do what we can to connect them with information or resources to try and pursue their goal.”
Opportunities like this not only allow for the chance to grow ones knowledge, but also in some ways help specific communities. Even helping those who have fought for our country.
“There’s a pretty large population of Veterans in West Virginia. So, that’s one reason why it’s important for us to do that but; I think working in Agroforestry and doing education and outreach about that can kind of help people adapt a little bit more quickly to a changing economic and environmental landscape. So, we would like to work alongside people to help be at the forefront of that. Especially finding an opportunity where we can support a community like the Veteran community in West Virginia.”
