Liam Payne’s girlfriend Kate Cassidy has revealed why she left him in Argentina just two days before his tragic death in October.
The couple were together in the days leading up to the tragedy, but Kate travelled home to Florida before Liam fell to his death from the balcony of his third-floor hotel room on October 16, causing multiple traumas leading to an “internal and external haemorrhage”.
Since Liam’s death, Kate has kept a low profile and returned to her hometown in New Jersey after moving her belongings out of the home they shared in London. She was spotted at his funeral in November, but did not arrive with his family.
Speaking to The Sun in her first interview since his death, she said: “I had a responsibility, we had a responsibility. We had our dog and obviously I never, ever thought this event would occur. It was a tragic accident and no, I never did think (he might die young). But, you know, we did have our own separate lives — this wasn’t the first time we have travelled separately.”
She was given the terrible news by one of his friends, initially believing it was a hoax. But then had a “horrible feeling” it was true after remembering him open up about his difficulties over the years. She said she has since made repeated calls to his mobile, just to hear him speak on his personal voicemail greeting.

Writing on social media, she spoke about how the pair had planned to get engaged, and told the story of a secret note Liam had written her.
She said: “A few weeks ago, we sat outside on a beautiful evening manifesting our lives together. I keep your note close, even though you told me not to look at it. It said, ‘Me and Kate to marry within a year/engaged & together forever 444′. Liam, I know we’ll be together forever, but not in the way we had planned. You’ll always be with me. I’ve gained a guardian angel.”
She continued: “I will love you for the rest of my life and beyond, carrying our dreams and memories with me everywhere I go. Forever yours, Katelyn 444.” In numerology, 444 is an angel number that represents guidance, love and support from guardian angels.

However, she later revealed online her reasons for leaving Argentina. She said: “I was so ready to leave. Love South America, but I hate staying in one place for too long and we were supposed to be there for five days, turned into two weeks and I was just like, ‘I need to go home.'”
The pair had been on holiday while he went through the process of renewing his US visa, where they planned to settle. His visa had expired due to his previous drug use and stays in rehab, meaning he had to undergo medical examinations and drug tests before receiving the all clear, the Mirror reports.
They met after former waitress Kate served Liam at a bar in Charleston, South Carolina, in 2022.
