Police have raided a “cannabis farm” following a discovery at a hotel in the Borders.

Officers swooped on the Hawick Hotel on North Bridge Street in the town after the alarm was raised at around 9.30am on Tuesday. Pictures take from the scene showed a police vehicle parked outside the premises with two uniformed officers making enquiries nearby.

It’s understood the hotel has not been in operation for some time.

According to its website, the premises – which was previously known as the Elm House Hotel before being renamed following a change of owners three years ago – boasts 16 en-suite guest rooms, in addition to a spacious bar/lounge and formal dining room.

The rear entrance of the property looks onto the Wetherspoon’s bar in Bourtree Place. Police remained standing guard outside the hotel on Tuesday evening and officers say their enquiries are ongoing.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 9.30am on Tuesday, February 4, we received a report of a possible cannabis cultivation in the North Bridge Street area of Hawick. Officers attended and enquiries are ongoing.”
