Pro-Palestine activists have doused Glasgow University in red paint over its alleged “arms investments”.
Campaigners from Youth Demand were filmed throwing the liquid across a campus building on Glasgow’s University Avenue on Thursday morning. A video shows the front of a glass building owned by the university smeared in red paint with police at the scene.
On social media, Youth Demand claimed that the university was responsible for “investing millions” in arms research.
A spokesperson said: “The University of Glasgow has invested millions in arms – in arms research, in arms investments. They have made us all complicit.
“Our tuition fees are going directly to causing genocide in Palestine. We are all complicit, all Glasgow University students are complicit. It’s our job to stand up and demand a trade embargo with Israel and the UK in order to prevent further complicity of the UK with the Palestinian genocide.”
A separate clip shared by the campaign group shows two members spraying red paint across the building in t-shirts that read ‘Youth Demand’. Officers confirmed two women, aged 22 and 24, were arrested in connection.
A statement from Police Scotland reads: “Around 10am on Thursday, 6 February, 2025, we were called to a report of vandalism at a premises in the Gilmorehill area of Glasgow. Officers attended and two women, aged 22 and 24, were arrested in connection. Enquiries are ongoing.”
A spokesperson for Glasgow University said: “This incident is now an on going police matter and as a result we cannot comment on it specifically. The University of Glasgow upholds the right to freedom of expression, including the right of staff and students to engage in peaceful demonstrations. However, we do not tolerate activities which interfere with the rights of others to go about their business in peace.
