Roadworks at a busy Dumfries junction are being managed with manually operated traffic lights “to keep traffic flowing” after drivers faced “major delays” earlier this week.

Gas distribution company SGN started work at the area known as Three Road Ends on Monday, with motorists suffering major delays – especially at school drop-off and pick-up time.

The work is due to continue for another few weeks, with people advised to allow extra time for their journeys – particularly if they are going to Dumfries and Galloway College, Mountainhall Treatment Centre, Midpark Hospital and the Crichton.

SGN spokesperson, Bradley Barlow, said: “We’re working in Bankend Road, Dumfries, as part of phase two of our work to replace our old metal gas mains with new plastic pipes.

“For everyone’s safety around our work area, we’ve installed temporary four-way traffic lights at the junction with Johnstone Park and Norfolk Terrace. To keep the traffic flowing, the lights will be manually operated daily from 7am to 7pm.

“This phase of our work is expected to be completed by Sunday, February 23.

“We’re sorry for any inconvenience our work may cause.”
