East Kilbride’s new railway station is starting to take shape as major works begin to modernise the trainline during a 16-week closure.
Network Rail shared an image of the platform being ripped up and the steel framework of the new station already erected in week two of the improvement works.
Rail replacement bus services have been operating between East Kilbride and Thornliebank since January 25, with no trains to run on the line until May 18.
The works are part of a £139.8million electrification of the 14-mile line between East Kilbride and Glasgow Central, which will also see new stations built at East Kilbride and Hairmyres on the footprint of the old stations.
The new accessible station building at East Kilbride is expected to open in June 2025.
Work on the station commenced in February 2024. The platform has been extended by 51 metres, foundations for the new building have been laid and the steel frame of the new station building has now been erected.
Construction workers are also tearing up the old platform.
Network Rail Scotland said: “East Kilbride’s new station building begins taking shape in the background, as the team tear up the old platform surface. It’s all part of our work to electrify and enhance the line.”
Mark Ilderton, Scot Rail service delivery director, previously stressed: “The works being carried out by Network Rail are absolutely critical in the latest phase of the project to electrify the railway on the East Kilbride line. Unfortunately, during the 16-week closure, we will be unable to operate trains to and from East Kilbride, and an alternate transport plan will help to make sure customers are still able to travel.
“In the coming weeks, we will communicate the plan through all our customer information channels, including where replacement buses will operate, and the other routes available for customers.”
