Scotland’s “best castle hotels for 2025” have been crowned.

When it comes to staycations, Scotland is home to countless hotels, inns, and holiday parks. However, if you are looking to add a touch of opulence to a getaway, there are a variety of castles all around the country that operate as high-end hotels.

Castle hotel specialists Manor Castles recently shared a roundup of their top 12 picks for Scotland. The experts included hotels from all over the country, from East Lothian to the Isle of Mull.

One of the Scottish hotels that Manor Castles singled out is Stonefield Castle in Kintyre. Described as a “cosy, homely castle”, Stonefield dates back to the 19th century and is set within 60 acres of estate near Tarbert.

The hotel features 36 rooms and an award-winning restaurant. The latter offers a traditional Scottish menu with a focus on seafood that showcases locally sourced produce.

Manor Castles wrote: “Built in 1837 in the, very popular at the time, Scottish baronial style, it has obviously been upgraded and modernised on numerous occasions but, more than most, Stonefield has held on to much historic ambience. Some of the 36 guest rooms are more modern in style but all are comfortable and cosy and some come with lovely views over Loch Fyne.

“The rooms are categorised as Classic or Deluxe, and in terms of their view, with lake view rooms, naturally enough, carrying an extra premium. More lovely views can be had at the castle’s award-winning restaurant, with the almost floor-to-ceiling windows helping things along.”

Another Scots castle featured on the experts’ list is Glenapp Castle Hotel in Ayrshire, which first opened its doors in 2000. Scotland’s highest-rated country house hotel, with five AA Red Stars and four AA Rosettes, features 17 rooms and suites and an acclaimed restaurant.

Manor Castles commented: “Glenapp is an extremely charming luxury castle hotel hidden away in the forests of South Ayrshire, Scotland. It has, since its inception in the year 2000, offered the best in five-star luxury with consistently high levels of hospitality and service.”

Elsewhere, Dalmunzie Castle Hotel in the Cairngorms is included in Manor Castles’ top 12. Home to 17 guest rooms, a fine-dining restaurant, and a nine-hole golf course, it was applauded by the experts for its “beautifully serene location” and “homely and cosy” ambience.

Manor Castles also singled out two city castle hotels, with Melville Castle Hotel in Edinburgh and Sherbrooke Castle Hotel in Glasgow earning spots on the roundup. The former was described as “lovely” and praised for its “bold patterns and colours”, while Sherbrooke was praised for its bathrooms and Morrison Room restaurant.

Other castle hotels named among the best in Scotland are Dalhousie Castle Hotel in Midlothian and Inverlochy Castle Hotel in Fort William. Off the mainland, Glengorm Castle Hotel on the Isle of Mull also features on the list.
