A British couple have been found dead in their holiday home in France after a potential “burglary gone wrong”.

The bodies were found by a neighbour on Thursday, February 6. Although French authorities have not confirmed their identities, they did disclose they were of a man and woman in their sixties, that were both British nationals.

Our sister title The Mirror reports that it is not revealing the location of the house in the south west of France, to prevent the couple being identified before the authorities notify their next-of-kin.

An investigating source said police were looking at the theory that the deaths were linked to a “burglary gone wrong”. They said: “The house is very isolated, close to thick woods, and it may have been targeted.

“A neighbour who goes on long walks with the couple discovered the bodies when he called round to see them. He is currently speaking to detectives.”

The couple were said to have owned the property and used it as a holiday home, and were “extremely popular” with the locals.

The source continued: “They had numerous friends locally and further afield including in Britain, and often organised dinner parties.

“They both loved the countryside, and were very happily settled. They were very proud of their house, which is situated well away from other buildings in the hamlet.”

The bodies were found on Thursday afternoon. By the evening, the house and garden were cordoned off by police, with forensic officers examining the suspected crime scene. Another source reported that senior detectives arrived by helicopter.

Drones have also been spotted overhead, with local police carrying out door-to-door enquiries. Prosecutors have opened a judicial enquiry, and are said to have “not ruled out any theory”.
