Pep Guardiola is facing a midfield injury crisis after new £50m Manchester City signing Nico Gonzalez hobbled off on his debut.

The former Barcelona player clashed with Leyton Orient’s Sonny Perkins in Saturday’s FA Cup tie and was struggling with his back. Medics attended to him on the field at Brisbane Road before he called it quits and was replaced by Bernardo Silva on 22 minutes. It gives the City boss another injury headache after he has had to go without Ballon D’or-winner Rodri for much of the season through injury.

The 23-year-old Nico joined City on a four-and-a-half-year deal from Porto in January that keeps him tied to the club until 2029. A versatile midfielder, Nico became City’s fourth signing in this window, joining Abdukodir Khusanov, Vitor Reis and Omar Marmoush as new additions to Guardiola’s squad. Gonzalez’s footballing journey began in Barcelona’s famed La Masia Academy back in 2013.
