After a very long wait, Amazon is reportedly poised to launch an exciting new version of its much-loved Alexa. The tech giant initially teased the makeover way back in 2023, promising a plethora of updates and a more natural interaction with the voice assistant.

Showcased via a live demo held in Washington DC, Amazon demonstrated how users can now communicate with Alexa as if she were a real-life person. With this upgrade, there’s no need for repeated wake words; once engaged, Alexa recognises the ongoing conversation.

Not only will the revamped Alexa manage tailored conversations, but rumours also suggest she’ll tackle more complex questions, handle your emails, and even sort out your weekend takeaway orders using straightforward voice commands, reports the Express.

The buzz about improvements has been confirmed at the highest levels. Andy Jassy, Amazon CEO, acknowledged that they’re introducing a “substantial number of GenAI applications across every Amazon consumer business,” aiming to create “an even more intelligent and capable Alexa.”

As the end of the month approaches, all signs hint at the imminent full revelation, with Amazon dispatching invites for a glitzy reveal event in New York.

However, there has been speculation that this enhanced Alexa may come with a new price tag. Until now, access to the digital assistant has remained free, a strategy that’s won over users worldwide, translating into billions of interactions each month.

To utilise Alexa, you’ll need a compatible device, but once bought, there are no additional charges. However, the Wall Street Journal reports that this is costing Amazon billions in lost revenue.

By introducing an improved version of its assistant – rumoured to cost £7.70 per month – Amazon could tempt users to pay for new features without alienating those content with their current service. Alongside Alexa, Amazon may also unveil a range of devices at the February event, including new Echo speakers and Fire TV Sticks.

These products haven’t seen a refresh in over a year, so it wouldn’t be a shock to see updated hardware revealed. The Amazon showcase will start on Wednesday, February 26, in New York.
