Proposals to make the new Troon Library more accessible have been approved.
Ayrshire Live previously told in April last year how the library was to relocate to the town’s Municipal Buildings, while the old library would be converted into a nursery.
Now plans to build an external wheelchair lift, to ensure easier access to disabled patrons, have been given the green light.
The plans were rubber stamped by council planners, so too was a request to make alterations at the historic municipal buildings.
The Municipal Buildings are category B listed, dating from 1932. The building is of a Neo-Georgian design incorporating the town hall with municipal offices to the front, and concert hall at the rear.
A description of the proposals states: “Listed building consent is sought for the installation of an external wheelchair lift, and alterations to the listed building.
“The proposals are concentrated on the front elevation and involve the minor regrading of the circulation space around hard standing and grassed area – where the proposed lift is to be located.
“A section of stone to the side of the steps is to be removed to facilitate access to and from the lift. The lift frame measures approximately 1.5 metres by 1.4 metres to a height of 3.1 metres, and constructed of dark grey metal frame, with infill glazed panels.”
The report continues: “The addition of a proposed lift access is considered to provide an additional means of accessing the building so as to meet the needs of a wide range of users. The proposed alterations are largely to facilitate the installation of the lift, along with an extended platform, and new handrails.”
In approving the plan council papers said: “The proposals are intended to facilitate accessible access to a public building, with the proposals representing a secondary and alternative means of access to the building in addition to the proposed new access ramp.
“Historic Scotland guidance on accessibility seeks to encourage the provision of physical access for everyone in ways that also safeguard the character of historic buildings and places. And it is considered that this proposal does not have a negative impact on the listed building.”
Troon Library is the second library in the region set for a relocation.
Ayrshire Live previously told how Girvan Library was to relocate to the town’s Knockcushan Street from its original site in Montgomerie Street.
