Do you have an expensive pooch who likes the finer things in life? Well, you might be in for a surprise if you track your pet spending.
This was the case for Redditors when one user confessed to the r/dataisbeautiful subreddit that they had tracked their spending on their dog. The pet had ‘lived like a queen’ for 13 years before passing away, racking up tens of thousands of dollars in expenses.
The user posted: “My dog Abby recently passed away, soon after her 13th birthday. I’ve been tracking all of my income and expenses in a database for a while now, so I thought it would be interesting to graph the spending on Abby.
“I made the graph in Exce. The categories are based on the place the money was spent, so the uncategorised expenses are places like pet stores, where I could have purchased any number of things. Food is the obvious one here, but it could also be treats, toys, hygiene, cleaning supplies, etc.”

The five primary categories included the dog’s aforementioned general spending, daycare and boarding, vet or medical bills, training and grooming costs. The post has garnered much attention on the platform with more than 24,000 likes and 2,000 comments – many of which focused on the daycare spending.
“She loved it so much — she went to daycare twice a week for several years, even though she was able to come to work with me,” the original poster replied. But, just how much was spent across Abby’s 13 years? Here are the results:
- Daycare and boarding costs: $20,303.99
- Veterinary and medical costs: $18,090.06
- General costs: $10,234.77
- Training costs: $2,639
- Grooming costs: $1,205.96
- Bark Box subscription costs: $726.64
- Tracking costs: $387.62
- License costs: £226.23
- Total costs: $53,814.27 (£43,000)
The spending equated to roughly $4,140 – £3,312 – for for each year of Abby’s life. The r/dataisbeautiful subreddit thanked the original poster for sharing their spending habits and sent their condolences. “Abby lived like a queen, she had the best life possible – sorry for your loss,” one of the most liked comments said.
