Tesco has made a major change to one of its popular money-saving initiatives that will affect every shopper.
Since 2020, the supermarket has been offering its Aldi Price Match campaign to help ensure customers are getting good value for their money. The campaign is aimed at providing competitive prices to its budget German rival.
However, it looks like it is now offering 145 fewer items than it was last year. The number of products this week is said to be 645, which is a drop from a peak 790 in August 2024, reports the Grocer.
Tesco has attributed the drop in products to a change in its methodology that it uses to determine if a product can be included in its Aldi Price Match. Any products included now have to identified within a large number of Aldi stores to qualify for the scheme.
The UK’s largest supermarket chain further explained that focusing on lines more widely stocked allows them to concentrate on key items that are popular to customers. As a result of this change, the number of products included in the scheme have been reduced.
A Tesco Spokesperson told the Daily Record: “We work hard to offer our customers the best possible value, quality, and service with every shop. Our powerful combination of Aldi Price Match, Low Everyday Prices and Clubcard Prices ensures we deliver great value for our customers as the UK’s cheapest full line grocer.”
Tesco’s announcement comes just after Asda axed its own Aldi and Lidl Price Match Campaign in January. As the first supermarket to take on the German rivals, the initiative initially dropped the cost of staple products by an average of 17 percent.
However, Asda phased out its price match scheme to begin focusing on the return of its iconic ‘Rollback’ scheme that is now available in store and online. The supermarket has collaborated with popular wellness guru Joe Wicks on the relaunch of the scheme that has slashed more than 4,000 items in price.
In other Tesco-related news, the supermarket has confirmed that its popular Kids Eat Free scheme will be back for the February half-term. Available in all 324 cafe’s across the UK from February 17 – February 21, it will offer a free kids hot meal, breakfast or pick ‘n’ mix deal when an adult with a Clubcard spends as little as 60p.
