MERCER COUNTY, W. Va. -Mercer County was one of the many places across the region hit by flooding over the weekend. While flood waters have started to recede in some places, many Mercer County residents are still feeling the impact.
The deputy director of Mercer County 911, Latoisha Walker, says they were kept busy over the weekend with the number of calls they received, with the primary cause of these calls being weather-related emergencies. She says they’ve just recently started slowing down.
“Currently, we’re kind of getting back to normal operations. We’ve had a few… downed propane tanks, things like that, but, overall, seems like it’s calmed down a lot…” says Walker.
Many of these calls came from people who needed to be rescued from the rising waters. Walker says they had fourteen home evacuations from the Lashmeet area.
There were also eight evacuations from vehicles, with flooding blocking traffic on some of the roads across the county. Walker says those who called 911 for rescue did the right thing.
“Definitely, you know, don’t drown, turn around. If you feel like you’re in an area that you need help or you need evacuation, absolutely call 911, and we can try to render aid…” says Walker, “…911 is here to help, so if you need us call us. We’re here twenty-four-seven.”
