Mitchell Van der Gaag is reportedly “in line” to take over as the new Motherwell boss.

Stephen Frail has been in charge as caretaker boss following the resignation of Stuart Kettlewell – with the club plunging deeper into trouble with defeats to Celtic and Ross County. Former Newcastle United and Dundee midfielder Temur Ketsbaia was understood to be on a two-man shortlist for the job.

The 56-year-old was most recently in charge of the Cyprus national side, but has had spells in charge of AEK Athens and Olympiacos. The Sun now state that Ketsbaia has pulled out of the running for the job – clearing a path for former Steelman Van der Gaag to step into the Fir Park hot seat. He is available after leaving Manchester United, where he was Erik ten Hag’s assistant, last July. Van der Gaag famously scored in 1997 to keep ‘Well in the top flight.
