David Tennant made an aimed dig at US President Donald Trump during his opening monologue on Sunday night’s event at the Bafta Awards, held in London’s Royal Festival hall.
The Doctor Who star returned to host the awards for the second year in a row, making his entrance to The Proclaimers’ I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles) which aired on television on Sunday, February 16.
He quipped “walked 500 miles just to host one BAFTAs more” and didn’t shy away from addressing controversial topics in his opening remarks.
Following Trump’s contentious re-election in November 2024, Tennant didn’t hold back in criticising the president in front of an audience of Hollywood celebrities and British A-listers.
He made a cheeky reference to Trump while discussing The Brutalist, describing it as “a film about incredible architecture. In fact, it’s the boldest architecture in film this year, apart from Donald Trump’s hair in The Apprentice.”

However, it’s not the first time the Scottish acting star has made his feelings clear on Trump. At the 2024 awards last year, he made light of the anticipated 2024 US presidential election, where now President Donald Trump and Joe Biden previously were gearing up to face off once more, during his opening monologue.

In reference to the Bafta-nominated surreal comedy Poor Things, the Scottish actor quipped that the film is about how a woman is reanimated and has a child’s brain put into her head, adding humorously: “one of them may even be elected president”.
On the topic of hosting the show, David recently shared: “I don’t currently feel particularly challenged because everything’s written down for me and I don’t have to worry about winning or not winning an award. If it was the first night of a play, I’d be curled up in a corner in the fetal position. But the fact that it’s not my day job certainly feels liberating.”
He also made a humorous quip about the hit thriller comedy film Saltburn. Surveying the glamorous audience, the Bafta host remarked: “Look at you in your tuxedos and fancy dresses, like the opening scenes of Saltburn. Let’s hope it doesn’t end up like the closing scenes of Saltburn.”
