A man is awaiting sentence for taking part in a cowardly attack on a teenager near Motherwell train station.

Jordan Simpson admitted kicking the youth who was lying on the ground in Bellshill Road.

Simpson, 21, appeared at Hamilton Sheriff Court on Friday following the assault on May 5 last year.

He had been freed on bail in two separate cases at the same court the previous month.

Lewis Devoy, prosecuting, said the victim and a friend had a “heated discussion” with Simpson and a 17-year-old male about 5.30pm.

He told the court: “The 17-year-old pushed the complainer, causing him to fall.

“He and Simpson then punched and kicked him on the head and body while he was on the ground.

“Passing motorists saw the incident and intervened. The accused fled but police identified him from CCTV footage.”

The victim had cuts to his nose and lip as well as bruising to his back.

Sentence on Simpson, of Bellshill Road, was deferred until next month for background reports.

At an earlier hearing his co-accused admitted assaulting the teenager and robbing him of his trainers. His sentence was also deferred.
