In the latest season of Call the Midwife, Trixie has taken on a significant new role, which has allowed her to “come into her own”, according to actress Helen George.
When Sister Julienne revealed that the health board had “declared war on Nonnatus House”, she turned to Trixie for help in saving their institution from closure, a challenge Trixie accepted without hesitation.
It seems this was a role Trixie was destined for, as after a meeting with the authorities, she returned with the news that they would live to fight another day.
When speaking to the Radio Times, Helen expressed her enjoyment at exploring this new aspect of her character, a role she’s portrayed since 2012.
“It’s like she’s sort of come into her own and she’s realised her worth,” the actress shared. “And she’s fighting hard and she’s sort of embodying her masculine. And that goes with her fashion as well, which I’m really enjoying.”

She added: “The power suits, there was something about embodying the masculine. The way that she goes into meetings, and the way that she has to stand up against these really powerful men, we wanted to mirror that in the fashion as well. So I think we did that.”
Megan Cusack joined the conversation, noting the “strength in clothing”. “Strong. Yeah, exactly,” agreed Helen. “The shoulder pads are bigger, the lapels are bigger.”
Trixie, the beloved character from Call the Midwife, experienced significant strife last season due to Matthew’s financial woes and his subsequent move to New York, where he currently remains.
She had previously confided in Sister Julienne that she and Matthew aimed to return to England soon, yet when speaking to the publication, Helen admitted she is in the dark about the couple’s future.
“Who knows!” she exclaimed. “It’ll be interesting to see what happens there. At the moment, I don’t know, and I’m excited to find out what happens.”
Meanwhile, the upcoming episode’s preview teases high tension, with Joyce anticipating her disciplinary hearing and an intriguing turn of events for May Turner. Actress Laura Main shared her hopes surrounding May’s fate.

“I just want everything to be OK with May,” she expressed. “I really, really do. I love those children, I love working with those actors, I genuinely love them and they’re a wonderful unit, and I just sort of hope it’s OK.”
“And yes, of course, we are still technically fostering her, so there is always that concern,” she added. Laura also hinted at further developments involving May in the current series, though she remained tight-lipped on specifics.
However, fans will have to wait an extra week for their next dose of Call the Midwife drama due to the BAFTA Film Awards taking over Sunday’s television slot, pushing the eleventh series’ second-to-last episode to the 23rd of February.
