HOUSTON (KHOU) – A 15-year-old from Texas is in custody after police say he ingested a large amount of marijuana then shot his mother and 17-year-old sister multiple times.
The incident happened around 11 p.m. Saturday at an apartment complex in Houston. Police say the 15-year-old suspect called 911 saying he was either going to kill someone or kill himself. First responders went to the scene, with firefighters being the first to arrive.
Firefighters spotted the 15-year-old in the parking lot with a gun. Police say the teen pointed the gun at them and said he had just killed someone before he threw the gun toward them and ran off. Police arrived shortly after, chased down the teen and took him into custody.
Inside the home, officers found the teen’s mother and 17-year-old sister with multiple gunshot wounds. They were taken to the hospital in “very critical” condition, according to Lt. JP Horelica with the Houston Police Department.
The teen’s 16-year-old sister was also in the home at the time of the shooting, but she was unharmed.
Police say the suspect apparently had “a bad reaction” after eating “a bunch of edibles.”
“He ended up using that gun and shooting his mother multiple times in the back and shooting one of his sisters multiple times,” Horelica said.
Neighbor Margaret Smith, a mother of two, says she’s thankful police were able to stop the teen before the situation got worse.
“It could have happened to anybody. He could have walked outside and did anything to somebody. I’m glad it wasn’t me. I feel for the family – the mom and the sister – but it’s some lessons you have to learn. Now, he’s got to learn the hard way, and that’s sad,” Smith said.
Police say officers recovered the gun used in the shooting.
