A police cordon remains in place today after Friday’s discovery, with a police van seen parked outside a block of flats on the High Street.

Hirwaun is a village in Rhondda Cynon Taf, roughly four miles from the post town Aberdare. It’s famed for the Hirwaun Ironworks, which began operations in 1765 and produced iron until 1859, reports the Mirror.

According to the 2011 census, the village had a population of approximately 4,990, a slight increase from the 4,851 reported in the 2001 census.

Hirwaun Ironworks holds the distinction of being the first coke-fired ironworks in South Wales, boasting a massive tramroad causeway constructed in the early 1800s to facilitate the supply of raw materials to the furnaces. In 1870, when the ironworks was put on the market, it was touted as having four furnaces equipped with a potent blast engine, among other features.

However, there were no interested buyers, leading to the dissolution of the Hirwaun Coal Company.
